Hi, I have been searching all over the internet to try and find out exactly what primers/paints I need to use over my Bondo repair job.

The Bondo lightweight filler I used over a front fender panel on my '92 Ford F-150 has been sanded to the original contour of the body, so I am ready to start with the primers and paints.

I have no idea what all to use. So, if someone could provide me with every layer of paint I need from the first layer of primer to the last layer of clearcoat.. that would be great. Also need to know how many coats of each layer, and what grit to sand each layer, etc. etc.

I obviously am looking toward using Dupli-color aerosol cans, and I have seen all of the Dupli-color brand primers and I am just confused about what order to use everything in.

I'm sure this is a lot to ask for.. but if somebody could please help me I would really appreciate it as I have been trying to figure out what I need for the past two days without any luck. As this is my first time ever painting over any area on a car before. :o

If anything I said above needs clarification, just let me know. :D

Thanks for the post. Since you are not ready for primer you can use our Filler Primer FP101 to start with and this will take you far as well. You will want to lay this down in fairly heavy coats. Let it dry for at least an hour. You will then want to wet sand with 600 grit paper with a soft thin foam sanding block. This will help keep the contour of your fender and also work out any sanding marks that is in the body filler. Repeat this until all sanding scratches are filled on all panels.

Next step is to use our Primer Sealer DAP1699. This will seal everything off.

What paint do you plan to use for color/clear? Are you using Paint Shop?

For the primer, you said to lay it down in fairly heavy coats, would about two or three be alright? And do I lay another coat while the previous is still wet? Also, Just 1 coat of the sealer? <- and the sealer does not get sanded, correct?

Sorry, I'm still new to this. :p

For the paint, I was planning on getting the base coat I need in an aerosol can and spraying it over the primed + sealed area. And then of course the clear coat.

I was going to order some of the Dupli-Color base coat in an aerosol can, but I contacted support on duplicolor.com and I was told that they do not have the base coat in my color

I have a 2-tone paint job and my colors are:

Medium Mocha Metallic, paint code is DJ

Dark Mocha Metallic, paint code is DW

So that brings up my next question, what brands of base coat paint (in an aerosol can) would be compatible with the Dupli-color primer + sealers? Or if you are not sure what brands, then what types? (Lacquer, enamel..?)

For the clearcoat, I am planning on using the Dupli-Color aerosol as well, as long as it is also compatible with the base coat I buy.

If I had a paint gun I would definitely use the PaintShop.

Thanks for all of your help so far!

Alex,

What is the year, make and model of the car you are working on? I will see if we make the paint.

Primer:

- 2-3 heavy coats waiting about 15 minutes in between coats.
- wait several hours before wet sanding with 600 grit
- repeat

Sealer:

- 2-3 medium coats
- it can be wetsanded and do suggest it to ensure a perfect base to top coat with color. Wetsand with 600 grit again

You will want to stick with lacquer paints with this job. It will be your best bet.

Sorry for the late reply,

Year: 1992
Make: Ford
Model: F-150 XLT

Again the 2-tone colors are:

Medium Mocha Metallic, the paint code is DJ

Dark Mocha Metallic, the paint code is DW

And then for the aerosol Dupli-Color clear coat to put over all of this, how many coats do you recommend?

I think that is my last question! :D

Thank you very much for the help so far.
