i am thinking about doing a stripe on my 99 vette. i just finished painting a set of track wheels with the graphite wheel paint. after applying the clear, the color is amazing! i want to use that color for the stripe on my white car. is there a aerosol color like that that is not wheel specific, or can I use the wheel paint ? Also, am I crazy for wanting to do a stripe with aerosol? what type of prep i.e; sanding, primer, clearing , etc.

Sounds like a cool project and idea for the stripe. One thing you need to make sure of when painting with any metallic paint whether its out of an aerosol or spray gun is making sure it lays down evenly especially on a large flat surface such as your hood.
Prep:
1. Mask off the area to be striped and all surrounding areas.
2. Wipe down area with grease and was remover or our Prep Spray PS100 or Prep Wipe PW100.
3. Scuff the area with a RED scuff pad. Make sure you get all the way to the edge where the paint meets the tape or your line won't be crisp.
4. Wipe down area again with grease and was remover or our Prep Spray PS100 or Prep Wipe PW100.
5. A primer is not needed since you are only going over a previously painted scuff surface.
6. Spray several light coats of the Wheel paint(yes you can use this even though it is marketed towards wheels). Lights coats will help keep the metallic particles even. I would say 2-4 coats should do it. If you see any striping or uneven areas in the color you can lay down a 'mist' coat. This is a very light final coat holding the can farther away. This will help distribute the metallic particles even more to correct the uneven appearance. Allow about 10 minutes in between coats.
7. Lay down about 2-3 coats of the wheel clear coat. Do NOT use clear lacquer. You cannot spray lacquer over enamel as the wheel paint line is enamel. The third coat should be the heaviest. This will help add gloss. You can actually add as many coats of clear that you want.
8. Remember that there will be a tape line when you peel the tape which will be the difference in the two paints. PEEL THE TAPE AWAY FROM YOUR FRESH PAINT.
If you have experience with a spray gun you can use our Mineral Gray BSP205 with our Clear Coat BSP300 over the entire hood. This will help eliminate the tape line and seal everything in.
Take a look at our videos at www.duplicolortv.com We do some two tone and stripe work and talk about taping and pulling tape.
Hope this helps.
