I'm strongly leaning towards the Paint Shop system and wonder about color sanding.
1. Do you color sand before the clear? If so, is 1500 grit okay?
2. If you wet sand (color sand) the base coat, will you also need to wet sand the clear?
3. Some has expressed concen about "durability" with the Paint Shop system. Is there anything that can be done to protect the paint better (i.e. more clear coats, etc.)? I understand that even the best factory paint that is neglected will fade and discolor over time.
Thanks

Hi Mustang,
I'm a new member here myself, but have asked roughly the same questions you have. I haven't shot the PS yet but will be in the next couple of weeks, here is what I have learned so far (Mods, or experienced painters, please correct me if I give the wrong info)
1) You won't necessarily need to color sand prior to clear, but if you do I believe 1500 should be fine. Keep the pressure on your gun (pressure AT the gun to around 20psi, the paint will lay more smoothly/evenly if you do so and help prevent orange-peel)
2) Regardless of if you do or don't wetsand the basecoat, you will need to wetsand the clear. 1500-2000 grit will do the trick there, after which a buffing with a random orbital (safer to use to prevent burn-through) or a rotary polisher with a buffing compound (I've seen 3m brand recommended here) should give you the deep shine you are looking for.
3) I can't speak to the durability of the system, but I would think extra coats (in theory) would help a bit down the road.
What are you planning to paint, and with which color?
Please post pics when you are done!
Thanks and good luck,
-Mike

Hi Mike, and thanks for posting. I was between the red and sliver. I'm painting and Factory Five Roadster (Cobra replica). I want a "vintage" color to match the style of build I put together (old BB ford FE, old school Halibrands, etc.).
I have been wrenching 30 plus years, but never touched a stich of body work paint. Thought I would give it a try. It seemed the Paint Shop system was made for beginners and is very forgiving from what I hear.
What are you working on and what color? Side note, this forum needs more pictures. :)

Hey guys. Here are some answeres to your questions....and yes Paint Shop is an excellent system for beginner painters. Being a Lacquer product it is very forgiving.
1. Do you color sand before the clear? If so, is 1500 grit okay?
A: Yes color sanding is suggested prior to clear especially if there are imperfections. 1500-2000 grit is suggested. Allow 24hrs of dry time before any wet sanding.
2. If you wet sand (color sand) the base coat, will you also need to wet sand the clear?
A: Yes you will always want to wet sand the clear. This will smooth out any orange peel or dirt. Use 2000-2500 grit and buff from there. Allow 24hrs of dry time before any wet sanding.
3. Some has expressed concen about "durability" with the Paint Shop system. Is there anything that can be done to protect the paint better (i.e. more clear coats, etc.)? I understand that even the best factory paint that is neglected will fade and discolor over time.
Being a Lacquer paint it will not be as durable as a 2 part Urethane system. Added clear will allow you to work with the paint if there ever is any chipping or fading.

Thanks for the info.
One more question. Can I mix the sliver metallic with the black? I'm thinking of a dark charcoal metallic.

you can mix colors to get the color you desire, but i suggest to mix enough to do the whole job so that there is no mismatch in color.

Not sure how dark you are looking to go but the Mineral Gray BSP205 is a dark metallic gray.

Mustang,
We ran a search in the Southern CA area... You can find the Mineral Gray here: A+S (North Hollywood), ph #818-768-7100.
Hope that works for you...
Thanks,
