Hello,

First let me introduce myself. My name is Mike and I'm from Chicago (just outside). I build/rebuild/restore motorcycles in my spare time and my father in law, who restores AMC muscle-cars just turned me on to the Paint Shop line of paints.

I've never painted before but have read I think every single page on the entire web on the "how to's." I'm going to buy a cheapo HVLP gun (to start with) and feel very confident that I can do this right!

The Paint Shop system seems great! I have some questions before buying/using:

1) What size tip/needle do I need in my gun(s) for the Primer, Base and Clear?

2) Is the primer that comes with the kit (or the Paint Shop primer in general) a high-build primer, or is that another product?

3) Can the Paint Shop base be used over another Duplicolor product (i.e. high build primer?) with the same durability as if I used the actual Paint Shop primer?

4) After color sanding the base coat (if needed) should it be buffed then cleaned before spraying clear, or is a good sanding with 1500 grit to smooth enough before shooting the clear?

5) Do you reccomend baking the parts after painting for increased adhesion/durability? (i.e. an hour at 180 degrees)

Sorry for all the questions at once but I have a couple of bikes lined up and ready for paint and I'm hoping to get pretty good. I'm looking forward to the new line of Candy paints on their way as well!

Thanks in advance,

-Mike

Great site here!

Mike,

Thanks for joining the Dupli-Color forums. Paint Shop is the perfect product for beginners like yourself. Below I have answered all of your questions. Let me know if you have any more.

1) What size tip/needle do I need in my gun(s) for the Primer, Base and Clear?
A: We have been using a 1.4 for all 3 paints with great results. You will want to use only about 20psi when using an HVLP gun but always test spray a piece of cardboard first.

2) Is the primer that comes with the kit (or the Paint Shop primer in general) a high-build primer, or is that another product?
A: The PS Primer is not a high build but is a rust preventative primer.

3) Can the Paint Shop base be used over another Duplicolor product (i.e. high build primer?) with the same durability as if I used the actual Paint Shop primer?
A: PS primer can be used over all of our primers except the enamels. PS is a lacquer and lacquer doesn't mix well over enemals. It will crack and lift.

4) After color sanding the base coat (if needed) should it be buffed then cleaned before spraying clear, or is a good sanding with 1500 grit to smooth enough before shooting the clear?
A: Color sand only if need. Sand wet only after 24 hrs of dry time. Buffing is not needed after wet sanding.

5) Do you reccomend baking the parts after painting for increased adhesion/durability? (i.e. an hour at 180 degrees)
A: If you have access to a paint booth that can bake then it certainly won't hurt but usually 24-36 hours is need for the paint to be dry enough to wetsand and buff. Since this is a non catalyzed paint full cure will take up to a week with all of the coats needed.

Thanks for the questions.
