welcome to the site!
Firebirds have alot of surface area to cover. If you are painting everything on the car, this including under the hood and inside door jams, then I estimate 4-6 cans of base at least! Does the car have a hard top, or T-Tops!. Plenty of clear will be needed to allow for wetsanding. . 5-6 cans at least. What color do you plan to spray?

at this time hugger orange with the prizm clear i beleive its called

hard top car originally red.

hows this stuff work with a hvlp setup? my grandfather swore by lacquer paints and the shine capability is amazing with the time put into it.

Laqcuer is great if you have good prep and prime before base is applied. Good preperation and primer is the key to a great paint job. Lacquer will shine the more you buff it. Old school laqcuers didnt require a clear coat to shine. The new Paint Shop system is great to use even though you need to clear coat over the base, but the advantage is that you now have a protective coat over the base. Also the clear coat is easy to wetsand and with a little buffing it will shine like glass

just trying to track down a good gun and compressor or hvlp setup i can rent/use on a budget. at the moment i have it under a red filler primer base to catch my highs and lows gonna fill and block sand then spray the paintshop primer down. my question is the prizm clear on the hugger orange what kind of effect will the bring the color to and is that clear different when finishing :went sanding buffing polishing etc:?

wetsanding and buffing is a must. even though it may look just fine after you spray the clear coat, you should still wet sand and buff. it will shine up really nice.

as far as the hvlp spray gun, if you spray paintshop at 15-20psi, it will look great. may have some orange peel, but dont worry. spray plenty of clear and you wetsand the orange peel out. buff to get the shine. i had best luck spraying primer at 25psi. and the base at 18psi. also, if you are having trouble with it not spraying evenly, then just add a little acetone to thin the paint.
