Can I use Duplicolor paint systems over acrylic enamel?I know i will have to wet sand, but what about primer? My truck was supposed to turn out satin black but instead it turned out flatter than a schoolhouse chaulkboard  Can I add a flattner in the clearcoat to get a satin finish? On a swb, how many quarts will I need to spray 3-4 coats of color? clear? I am not worried about the inside of the bed, as this will get Duplicolor bed liner, unless I can spray over this also. I am planning on jet black with old school flames, white, yellow, orange and red.

I have sprayed lacquer on well cured oil based enamel before with no problems.

More than likely the lacquer will lift the enamel if it is fresh.

Hope this helps ya. :)

I dont know if it does or not. The truck was painted with acrylic enamel urathane. It was gloss black was a flattner added. It was mixed 8 parts paint, 4 parts reducer, and 1 part hardner. What I call oil based enamel is what you would buy at Ace Hardware, like Rustoleum. This wasnt what was used. How long does it take for the paint to cure? It was painted last week and I guess I was under the impression that it was cured when I drove it home.

Correct. Paint Shop is Lacquer and will lift the Enamel. Considering the paint is as fresh as a few weeks then you are going to want to apply a sealer over the Enamel or strip all of the old paint back off. You might be better off striping it off because you may end up with too many coats of paint.

You may want to give your local Sherwin Automotive store a call to answer adding a flattener to our lacquer clear. The flatteners that are used today might be designed for urenthane paints.

I would say about 3-4 quarts of paint to achieve even coverage and still have enough to sand on if needed.

Thanks for the replys, guys. Sanding off the dull black doesnt sound like much fun. Having it done costs are out of the question. This leaves me two choices. Leave it like it is or rat hole a little more and find someone to paint it the right color. I wish I found out about Duplicolor Paint System BEFORE all of this happened. Thanks again.

Just saw an add on TV for Maaco
Presidental Paint job is half price for 249

I have talked to people that have been very happy with their work.
From what I have read/heard most like it better than Earl Scheib.

Might be time to go and have your Scout painted if you are thinking of a new paint job.
