View Full Version : prep-all removing primer?

I'm painting some plastic motorcycle fairings. They were already painted (from the factory that way).

I've scuffed them with the red 3M pad, and primed them with the sandable primer. I then wet sanded them lightly with 1000 grit, just to smooth them over before the color coat. After sanding, I sprayed some prep-all (wax and grease remover) on them to clean them. What happened was the primer literally just liquified and wiped right off the plastic parts. Not a spec of pimter left on the parts. It was like the prep-all just washed the primer right off. Fortunately, I only sprayed one part. So the rest still have primer on them.

Question - was that the prep-all doing that, and I shouldn't use it? or was it that the primer never adhered to the parts? (it was about 24 hours between priming the parts and spraying the prep-all).

If it's the prep-all, then fine, simple to fix (don't use it), but if it's the primer not sticking to the plastic parts, then that's a bit more complicated. Should I have scuffed more? Or used adhesion promoter? or a different primer? And if that's the case, should I remove the primer from the other parts and start again?

Any help would be appreciated....

The Prep-All is too strong for fresh aerosol paint. If it were a 2 part primer then it would be fine. After wet sanding, just wipe them down with clean water and they will be fine for painting.

That's what I figured. I ended up simply using the prep all on all the parts and cleaned them bare again, and started over with some adhesion promoter and resprayed the primer. Then I sanded and washed them. They seemed much better at this point.

I've since done my final painting - white color coat, a dusting of glitter effex, and 4 coats of clear. They look fantastic. Now I'm just letting them cure before I decide if I'm going to sand and buff. There's almost no orange peel on the parts, so it may not need it.

thanks for the help! I'll post a pic when it's done.
