Gentlemen,

I am brand new, I am currently working on a 92 jeep renegade. I have finished the bodywork, but now I have the current project in a state of original paint (dull) and places where I had to use some filler. First off is there one type of primer I can you use for the whole thing? Or do I need to use a couple different types? Also, what are the steps in my sanding grit before painting the top coat? It is a jeep, but I still want to look good and be glossy and smooth do I need to sand and clear or can I just get away with painting it. Sorry for having these types of "newbie" questions for you guys, but I figured this is why this forum is here.

Thanks again

Mac

I would use the duplicolor primer surfacer you can buy a gallon for around $50 at your local parts supply, you have to mix it 1:1 with an acrylic lacquer thinner (available in gallon size at any big box hardware store for around $16). It works well on most surfaces. As far as sanding goes, start with a 100-150 grit(to knock down any rough edges), then follow it up with a 220 grit till smooth to the touch. Shoot the primer, then sand lightly with the 220-500 grit. Make sure to tack cloth and clean between sanding. You are then ready to apply your color coat. If you just want to do the color that is fine just do a couple extra coats (to ensure that it will last). Or you can do a few coats of clear. Just make sure that you wet sand with 1000-1200 grit on any sags, smudges, dust marks or hairs between coats.
