i'm doing a fishing reel and need to lay a primer down. the problem is it's anodized aluminum, but some areas were scratched to bare metal. can i use the self etching primer over the anodized aluminum so that i'll have a completely even surface? and should i ever bake primer?

fisherman,
Thanks for your post. If your fishing pole is cleared and has some scratches I would scuff the entire thing down with a red scuff pad. This will take care of 2 things. Help even out any scratches and it will also scuff up the entire surface so the primer has something to bite in to. Use the Self Etch primer first and then our filler primer FP101 over that which will also help fill in any sanding marks and scratches. There is no need to bake the primer. Once the filler primer is dry you can wet sand with 1500 grit paper. Make sure you wait at least an hour in between coats of filler primer when sanding. After everything is wet sanded and clean you can top coat with your color of choice. Always use a wax and grease remover such as our Prep Wipe PW100 or Prep Spray PS100 for prep prior to paint. You don't need to soak in the prep solvant. Just spray it on a rag and wipe it on and let dry for 15min.
I hope this helps.
