I believe metal specks is lacquer, but I'm not sure...I know that the metalcast is enamel. I sprayed part of my engine cover in metalcast, and I want to cover the rest of the cover in metal specks silver...will this cause an issue where the lacquer meets the enamel on the cover? I was going to use the Textured Metallic in silver, but nobody near me has it, or can get it. Can I use the metal specks over the metalcast as long as the metalcast is fully cured? How long do I need to wait for the metalcast to be fully cured?

If I can find the Textured Metallic in Silver, is it OK to use this on the plastic engine cover, or will there be too much heat for it? I could use just the Metalcast base coat to paint everything, it is a nice, bright silver.

OK, I was able to get my hands on 2 cans of Textured Metallic Silver. Now I just need to know if this will hold up on the engine cover. Can this paint tolerate the engine heat? Or am I better off just using the Metal Cast base coat silver paint?

OK, I had some spare time today, so I got my engine covers painted with the Textured Metallic Silver. I'm painting my accents to the cover and the oil cap with Metalcast blue. Do I need to clear the Textured Metallic, or will it hold up OK under the hood? Should I clear it to make it easier to clean? If so, which clear would be the best to use? I could have just used the Metalcast ground coat for the silver...hopefully I didn't make a mistake using the Textured Metallic.

50, Sorry for the last reply. Been out of the office. Textured Metallic will hold up on plastic if the prep was done correctly. We have had Textured Metallic on the plastic fan shroud of the 79 El Camino we half restored a couple of years ago and its still fine with no flaking. A plastic engine cover will never get hot enough to bother any paint that is applied on it. If you do choose to clear it you can use our Engine Clear DE1636. This may make it easier to clean.

No problem, I appreciate the help. I found some threads that were a couple years old stating that the DE1636 would turn brown when used under the hood. Do you have any idea if this is still an issue? I'm thinking I may go ahead and clear them, just for cleaning purposes. Also, can the DE1636 be used over the Metalcast if I wait 5 days after spraying the color coat?

You can use the engine clear over Metalcast. I actually highly recommend this. It makes the Metalcast more brilliant. Acts as a candy coat. The engine clear only turns color if applied over bare aluminum on components that get very hot. You will be fine in both cases.

Brian, Thanks again :D ...last 2 questions I promise ;) !
Since I painted the engine covers and metalcast pieces yesterday, do I have to wait any certain length of time before adding the clear now? Lastly, does the engine clear HAVE to be heated to cure?

Again, thanks for all of your help...I know you have your hands full here!

No problem on the questions.

You can clear coat at any time but it would have been best to clear with in a few hours of painting. You will be fine.

The inherit heat from the engine will cure all of the paints.

Thanks for the help, I'm going to get the engine enamel clear tomorrow!
