View Full Version : Compared to lacquers of seveal years ago?
I last painted with lacquer paint in about 1993 when I repainted my Corvette. I used Dupont lacquer without any clear. It use to be great for home hobbiest and I like the reduced health hazards without the hardners. It has held up just fine, although it's a bit of a garage queen. At that time they had reduced lead in lacquer but it was still in there. Compared to lacquer of that time - how does the Duplicolor Paint Shop paint compare in terms of durability, chip resistance, and fuel damage resistance? With the clear coat could I expect Paint Shop to be comparable, somewhat better, not quite as good?
A second question - from a lot of the reports and forum threads on Paint Shop paint I get an impression that in it's packaged form it may be a little under-thinned and might spray a little better with a little further thinning. Is there any problem thinning Paint Shop by another 20% or so with a quality lacquer thinner?
Thanks much for the help.

Dan,
I do not have much experience with the "old" lacquer paint so it is hard to compare Paint Shop to it. I will say that we have had test panels of Paint Shop outside in the elements on our test fence for the 3 years Paint Shop has been on the market. It has held up very well and it still holds its gloss. There are some water spotting however none of the panels were waxed. Paint Shop is fuel resistant but only to a certain extent. It has much better fuel resistance once cured for several weeks. Since lacquer is solvant based it takes time for the solvants to evaporate. Paint Shop will dull a little once fuel gets on it however it can be polished back to a shine.
If you want to use a urethane clear I am going to suggest Sherwin Williams HPC15 air bake clear.
Even though Paint Shop is prereduced you can thin it as much as you want. We offer lacquer thinner in a quart or gallon and most automotive retail stores.
I hope this helps.
