Has anyone done this? Prepping my tins on my '77 Harley FXE and am thinking of doing the candy red over jet black with Sherwin Williams HPC 15 clear for more durability, over Thanksgiving...Looking to achieve a deep dark red that almost looks black depending on the light........thanks!

well the candy over jet black was a flop, didn't like how it looked, stole the idea from HOK......My review of Paint Shop.....kinda mixed.....the primer and candy red (test panel) sprayed well, and the fast dry times is great...the jet black gave me issues....I turned 1/3 of my shop into a temp spary booth. Temp was held right at 68 to 69 degrees and the humidity was at 39%. My gun is a newer Devilbliss Finishline with a 1.3 tip....It wanted to spray grainy and if I held it into the air and shot it, it spider webbed? I start at 20 psi, went up to 25, down to 15 and then 10 and up to 30, trying every flow and fan adjustment and distance and speed I could. I should have taken a pic of the huge peice of cardboard I was testing pattern on. Ended the first day wet sanding black. The second day i tested the candy red on a test panel I was also doing, and it sprayed the best of the 3 in my opinion, but didn't like how it looked. So I decided to try the black once again for one more coat, and still had the same issues....I just held it close and moved quick. I even dropped the shop temp to 65 thinking it was drying too quickly? I don't know.....ended up with a little bit of a rough texture, wouldn't call it orange peel, but not that bad since I sanded previous coats.....then I pulled the area I masked and saved, since it is custom stencil air brushing, and it came off very clean, pinstriped, and cleared it with Sherwin Williams HPC 15 which I was very impressed with....great fast, non baking urethane clear! I still need to wet sand and buff everything but that will be another day...In the end, spending less than $200 on all paint, clear (most of the cost), and a few materials, I am pleased with the result...I plan on changing to different tins eventually and didn't want to stick a lot of money in these...I wish I knew what went on with the black. Oh yeah, I even cleaned the gun an extra time just to be sure......sorry for cell phone pics, digital was almost dead when I started and died (and still is)....it does look better and a lot shinnier in person

oh yeah, the reason for repainting in the first place was the clear was bubbling from gas fumes around gas caps and pet****( funny, fuel supply, rhymes with rock), and whoever painted it previously was way off on both sides of the tank being symetrical.....I'm completely going through the bike this winter.....and tore it down to the frame, which was painted white, and just had powdercoated mirror black...It's a '77 FXE shovelhead with a polished Baker 6 speed trans, and new wide glide front end with 16" apes.

.....well.....last update, last night I started to wet sand the Sherwin Williams clear and due to the rough texture of the black I actually had to sand through the clear in some spots to get it smooth......SO, after wet sanding everything with 1000, I shot 6 coats of clear, letting it flash between double wet coats, and it finally looks pretty descent.....going to do a light, final wet sand this afternoon and buff and polish.....I still wish I knew what caused the black to spary so crappy........On one corner of one of the tanks I accidently went through the black a little, it was in a spot the would never be seen once on, but they are going to be off quite a while and didn't want anyone to see my mistake, so I ran to O'Rileys and bought one of those aresol paint sprayers so I wouldn't have to clean the gun twice.....Once again, the black shot out very grainy and spider webbed in the air.....I saved some money, but did a lot more work than intended. I don't think I will use this product again.

Larry sorry for the late reply. HPC15 clear is what I have been recommending for use over Paint Shop regarding the use of a urethane clear coat. I am not sure if you read through any other posts but considering your question above you have not come across them. We have used the HPC15 in the past and love it. Using and spraying urethane clear does take a little more skill vs a lacquer clear such as Paint Shop considering urethane is easier to run. We appreciate the detailed how-to and pictures. It looks like your Harley will one fine looking ride. Post up some pictures when you get it back together.

Did you read where I had problems spraying the jet black? HPC 15 was very easy to spray, I liked it alot, I did have a lot of problems with the jet black though. Still curious as to what someone thinks was the problem?

Larry I did read that. All I can think of is that the product may have needed to be thinned a little further. We have been spraying Paint Shop on a regular basis and have not run into the spider webbing issue. Thanks again for your post.
