Hi!

I finished painting my rims with Dupli-Color High Performance wheel coating about two days ago and the paint does not seem to harden enough. I can mark it with my fingernails. Will it completely harden in a couple more days? I've given one coat inside the wheels and 2 coats on the outside, but both sides seem to stay a little "soft".

Temperature was optimal, humidity was 50% in the garage. I brought the wheels in the basement for drying.
Here are the steps I've been through :

-Sanding and sand-blasting the rims
-Cleaning with paint thinner
-Prime it
-Wait 2 days
-Clean with a dry rag
-Paint 1st coat with the wheel coating (multiple thin layers)
-Wait 2 days again
-Clean with a dry rag
-Paint 2nd coat with wheel coating (a little thicker layer)

On the can it says to re-coat within 1 or 2 hours, which is what I did for each coat. Were 2 days enough or too much between coats ?

I'm having new tires installed in 2 days (3.5 days after final coat), should I wait them to dry a little more before putting the wheels on for winter?

Thanks for any advice!

Martin.

You can still have the tires mounted. Just make sure that the tire shop uses a tire machine that doesn't touch the rim. This type of machine should be used regardless and also used when mounting tires onto aluminum wheels. Once the wheels are mounted on your car the heat from the brakes will bake the paint and make it extremely hard. I used out wheel paint directly on the calipers of my car and the paint is rock hard.

Thanks for the post.

Thanks for the tips!

It's been about 7 days now and everything seems to be properly cured. My coats might have been a bit heavy, next time I'll do lighter coats.

The new tires' installation left some marks (were installed after 4 days), but since It's my winter wheel set, I just did some touch-ups and I'm satisfied.

The paint itself is great and if I have to do it again on another set, you can be sure I'll use Dupli-Color again!

Thanks again,

Martin

That stuff works great on everything BUT headers. I have tried every trick in the book for the headers, but from my experience, the only thing that will stick to the headers is ceramic coating.

Nothing sketchy about black wheels. :D
